Adoption

Why adopt from Pet Haven?

Thank you for considering adoption! Adopting dogs and cats from rescue organizations is critical to finding a home for every cat and dog.

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue, meaning all of the animals in our program live with foster families until they can find their forever homes. Foster families really get to know the dogs and cats in their care, and provide important information about the animal to potential adopters, so foster families are great resources for potential adopters! For example, the foster family will know if the pet is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention and special needs the pet will have.

Plus, every animal in Pet Haven’s adoption program is examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, treated for any known medical ailments, implanted with a microchip ID, and spayed or neutered. Pet Haven also provides a 10-day health guarantee for each adopted animal. Within the first 10 days of adoption, if you or your vet uncover a medical condition that existed prior to adoption, Pet Haven will work with its vet partnerprovide medical attention at no charge to the you.

Where do the dogs and cats come from?

Pet Haven works with rural rescue groups in Minnesota and Iowa, as well as local animal control facilities to bring in cats and dogs. The rescues Pet Haven partners with are in areas that simply don’t have the people to adopt their cats and dogs. The Twin Cities provide the needed base of adoptive homes to help find forever homes for these animals.

Pet Haven also takes in Pet Haven “returns.” While Pet Haven works very hard to place cats and dogs in their forever homes, we know that circumstances sometimes require people to make the hard choice to give up their pet. Any animal adopted from Pet Haven is always welcome back into our care should the need arise. The animal goes back into foster care until it can find a new forever home.

When you see a dog or cat that interests you, fill out an application either online or at an adoption event. (You can find the online applications on the Dog Adoption and Cat Adoption pages.) A volunteer will get back to you to discuss next steps, which involve meeting the animal, as well as a home visit. If it’s a good match, you fill out an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. The adoption contract obligates you to properly care for the animal you are adopting from Pet Haven and explains the health guarantee. Pet Haven reserves the right to refuse any adoption we do not feel is appropriate. We want happy pets and happy adopters!

How much does it cost to adopt a pet from Pet Haven?

The adoption fees vary depending on the age and breed of the animal. Every pet placed through Pet Haven has current vaccinations, a microchip ID, and has been examined by a veterinarian to make sure that it is healthy at the time of adoption. Pet Haven also pays to have the animal spayed or neutered if it isn’t already. Believe it or not, adoption fees rarely, if ever, cover the costs of the medical care each animal receives. Pet Haven does not make any profit off adoption fees, the fees simply help offset the costs it incurs in caring for its foster animals.

I don’t live near Minneapolis/St. Paul. Can I still adopt from Pet Haven?

Pet Haven limits its animal placements to locations within 60 miles of the Twin Cities. Haven is committed to providing post-adoption services and therefore the new home must be within reach of our volunteers and veterinary clinics. These post-adoption services include our health guarantee, behavior counseling, and if necessary, return of the animal to Pet Haven.
