Do you like to run with your pup? Or perhaps you’re more interested in a leisurely walk around a lake with your canine best friend? In either case, Pet Haven has an event just for you. And most importantly, your participation will help raise funds for Pet Haven programs!

On August 24, 2013, Pet Haven will host an inaugural Pet Haven Doggy Dash in celebration of companion animals, their health, and our own.

More than 150 owners and their dogs will participate in a 3K9 walk or 5K9 competitive timed run at beautiful Normandale Lake in Bloomington. Dogs are encouraged to participate in both events. And the day is more than just an athletic event, as the Pet Haven Doggy Dash will showcase festivities for the entire family!

This event is a great opportunity for the entire family to enjoy the day outside, and for a good cause.

On Sunday, April 28, Pet Haven raised funds and celebrated with Twins fans at the first Pet Haven Bark at the Park.

130 people purchased tickets through Pet Haven, with a portion of the proceeds going directly to support Pet Haven programs. The fans had a great time on a beautiful day, made even better when the Twins pulled out a 5-0 W-I-N over the Texas Rangers.  

A highlight of the event was when Armor, one of the wonderful dogs available for adoption through Pet Haven, was on the field during the national anthem. Armor represented companion animals everywhere, and was the first dog ever on Target Field for a Twins game! Interested in adopting Armor? You can find out more here.

If you check out our Facebook page you’ll see photos of recent intakes from both the cat and dog divisions.  Adults and babies.

Dax was live trapped a few days after her kittens were born.  She was just a kitten, along with her brother, born only a year ago.  On April 7 she had 7 babies in a yard in S Minneapolis.  All are doing well now, growing and responding to everyday handling.  Pick those babies up, pet them, put them on their back and pet their tummies, give them kisses, talk to them!  The list goes on.  How often do you do that?  Not once a day or every other day, you fit it into your schedule to do it as many times a day as possible.

To our knowledge Dax had not had people attention in her neighborhood.  After 2 1/2 weeks she is scooting forward to get her cheeks and head rubbed, got a manicure yesterday and has started getting sub q fluids everyday as those babies are really starting to drain her of calories.  It is hard for a disadvantaged mom who has had no care and no source of regular food to find enough to eat for herself – much less  7.

And here we are today -

Mom has a dirty nose because she smooshes her face into the canned food and it is hard to clean off.  The babies are going to start working on softened canned kitten also to relieve her and keep them growing.

Her brother has now been live trapped too and has been tested and neutered and we’ll see how he adjusts to having people in his life also – no surprise, he’s an orange and white boy.

When Pet Haven brings in puppies and kittens as well as adult ones, they are available for adoption once their pictures and bios go up on our website.    At that point you can submit an application and it will be considered in order received.  Prior to appearing on the website there are vet visits, vaccinations, treatment for parasites, spay and neutering and a period of ‘getting-to-know- you’.

Not only is it a great opportunity to raise funds for Pet Haven, but you’ll also be present the first time a non-working dog will be allowed at Target Field for a Twins event… and it will be a Pet Haven pup!

Join Pet Haven Inc. of Minnesota in cheering on our Minnesota Twins as they battle the Texas Rangers on April 28th. Watch as we make history, when for the first time a dog will be on Target Field during game time, as a Pet Haven adoptable dog will be representing rescue dogs everywhere during the national anthem!

For $25 you will receive a Pet Haven Bark at the Park short sleeve tshirt and a Home Run Porch View ticket.  Both tshirts and tickets will be available for pick-up the day of the event at Target Field, Gate 29.  Plan to arrive an hour before the game, which starts at 1:10pm, to collect your items from one of our game day volunteers!

The cat division will not have adoptions until April 6 and 7.  We’ve posted a few of the ‘kids’ who will be attending so you can check out bios as well as pictures.

Nico is about 5 – 6 months old and is basking in the sun.   He loves a warm lap too, in between play sessions.

Max, orange tabby, is about 9 months old, and Kodiak, flame point siamese x is just over a year old.  Both boys lived together at another shelter and  Kodiak loves another cat to nurture so if you are looking for 2, they would make a good pair.  Kodiak is a little more reserved but friendly.  Max is more of a goof ball and loves to play.

Nico thinks great thoughts in the sunshine but mostly likes to play, gets along with another cat and hopes to find a forever, loving home soon.  He’s between 5 and 6 months old and has a lot of loving and lap time from his family on his wish list!

When he came to us he was missing fur all around his neck as well as quite a patch under his chin.  It’s growing back nicely and he loves people, despite the treatment he had at an earlier time in his life.  It is easy to blame people for mistreatment but until folks learn to love and respect themselves as well as treat their family and friends with respect, we will all, animals and people, continue to suffer.

Reach out, be a mentor, volunteer to help animals as well as the people you meet every day.  Find a program and make a commitment of time and money, too,  if you are able.  The rewards are forever.

Despite appearances, he is really a bird dog at heart.

Recently, this message came from his new owner:
I thought I’d share this story about Reyn and what he did yesterday on our walk in the woods. He and I have been at our lake home for two weeks, enjoying lots of walks. Yesterday when I took Reyn on a walk in the woods behind our house he sniffed out a grouse that was completely buried in the snow to stay warm. Reyn is a true hunter and still makes me wonder if he fended for himself for a period of time. He hones in on smells like nothing I’ve ever seen in a small domestic dog. Yesterday he stopped, put his head back sniffing the air and then dove head first into the snow. Seconds later a grouse popped up and Reyn lunged for him. I immediately pulled back on his leash but he still managed to pluck two tail feathers from the bird. The only other dog I’ve ever had that hunted like Reyn is my dog Bandit that was half toy collie and half red fox. I’ve never had a domestic house dog like Reyn. Right now he’s laying in front of the patio door, in the sun, watching the squirrels eating sunflower seeds under the bird feeder. He’s a great dog and I love him so much.
