Are you one of those people?

Maybe you’ve been looking for a jogging companion? Or a dog who would love to walk with you a couple times a day? A dog who would be up for power walks?

Armor is a guy who loves life!

Sometimes his enthusiasm is hard to contain and he jumps on people or on meeting other dogs but he’s trying really hard to contain those first bursts of enthusiasm.

With all that energy and joy, he needs a home that will walk him a couple times a day and he walks best on a gentle leader.

Fetch is a favorite as is ‘keep-away’ when he decides it is his game, not yours!

He has a red rubber bone, a super kong toy, that is his very favorite and he will chew on it for hours and entertain himself but really prefers to have you interact with him. That’s why dog lovers and dogs got together – to be an integral part of each others lives.

He respects ‘leave it’ and will give up a toy or food dish if asked. Armor doesn’t always pick up on the cues another dog sends when it doesn’t wish to play or wishes to quit playing. If he were to live with another dog it would need to be one who wishes to romp and wrestle and play chase with him until they are worn out and can be snoozing buddies.

Armor needs an experienced dog owner who understands that the people in the house are the head of the pack. That takes a lot of pressure off Armor and he is respectful of his leaders. He is a bully breed and is a fine example of that breed so he can help you educate others about their loving potential.

He’s house-trained, likes his crate when you are gone and loves to sleep on the bed with you. Is your bed large enough?

Tiana is a girl looking for a busy family who loves to take long walks. Do you have someone you could share walking with? A walk in the morning and another after work? Heaven!

What does she like? Most everything! Stuffed toys and squeaky toys, TUG-OF-WAR, she’s great with another dog and running in the back yard helps to run off energy but that doesn’t make up for a long walk with you!

Tiana is good with children and is house-trained and her foster dad says she is SUPER CUTE. She’s good around the house and feels the need to alert you if someone is at the door or walking by outside with 3 or 4 barks. You’ll need to restrain her by her collar when you open the door to greet folks or have them into the house or she will take off and then it will take some time and an open car door to entice her back.

Tiana and Armor are just two of the dogs Pet Haven is looking for forever homes with active families or adults. More to come . . .

Dakota was an owner surrender when she came to Pet Haven at about 3 yrs. of age. The surrendering owner didn’t disclose her reactivity to other dogs, counter surfing, and fabric chewing habits and she was a challenge in her foster home. The fosters worked with Canine Coach and brought Dakota around and made the decision to adopt her!

About 10 years have passed and she has ‘retired’ in AZ with her owners who report that she continues to be a full-of-energy girl who needs lots of stimulation and excitement in her life.

Just thought I’d update you on Dakota. She loves it here in Tucson! Lizards to chase and dogs next door she’s able to play with. She became ill last summer, with much coughing, and I feared it was “valley fever”, a local fungal infection. Turned out, ironically, to be blastomycosis, which she must have brought with her from MN. The best meds were impossibly expensive, but the same stuff they use for valley fever seems to have worked on the blasto.

The house came with a pool, and I took her in a few times last year, shortly after we arrived, so that if she happened to wind up in the pool somehow she would know how to get out. She didn’t like it. This year she has overcome her fear and will swim willingly! We’re waiting to see if she will ever go in by herself to cool off.

She’s 11 now, and showing no signs yet of slowing down. We’re proud of her. She’s become such a good dog. She’s still a bit iffy with other dogs– an altercation with a Shepherd twice her size in the hardware store comes to mind, though in fairness, they surprised one another at a corner– but that’s her only failing and is much less an issue than it was. We’re so glad she came into our lives, in spite of the early trials she put us through.

Ed & Edith

Aren’t we all a lot alike? Dogs, cats and people. We rescued, we adopted, we trained and then we do our best to correct or lessen behaviors, we gain trust, we appreciate what the cat or dog brings to our relationship and we love each other.

All of us, human and companion animals, need to be appreciated for what we have to offer. Ed, Edith and Dakota were there for each other in the past and have enjoyed many years together, appreciating the loving bond between them more and more as time goes on.

Duchess will be arriving today to the dog division. She’s a very thin girl and has had injuries to a back foot which will need care as she heals and she may be facing more surgery on that foot.

What else do we know about her?

She’s a happy girl despite her lack of care – certainly not adequate food, no medical care for her injuries and an event with a porcupine that left her with quills in her face!

She likes other dogs.

She walks well on a leash.

Her former family loved her as is shown by her demeanor but have come on circumstances that mean they can no longer feed her or care for injuries.

Her foster home will learn a lot more about her personality as she stays for healing and recuperation.

Good luck, Duchess!

The cat division will be taking back an almost 4 yr old male fellow named Duke when we had him. His owner is moving for a job and has made room in her new life for her two dogs but not for him. It will take some time for this fellow to begin to bond with new people and to adjust to a new foster home and then start attending adoption events. As you can see, Duke (tongue out) had a brother when he was came into rescue as a kitten.

We are always saddened when an owner chooses not to continue their commitment to a dog or cat they have rescued. Sometimes there are changes in life that demand surrendering and at other times the animal has simply become less valued.

Thinking about adoption? Where are you in your life? Still in school or entry level jobs? Have roommates that change from year to year as well as your housing? Our dogs and cats, our companions, require regular, yearly vet care with at least a wellness exam. Is that something you can take on?

Maybe you’d love to have a cat or dog in your home and you could – for 6 months or a year. Consider being a foster. Everyone benefits – you, because you know you are reaping the benefits of the love you will receive and the satisfaction that you are bringing one more homeless canine or feline in off the streets to find a loving, forever home. In a few years, you will be able to adopt your own companion but you can make a huge difference in the life of another companion in the meantime.

On Sunday, April 28, Pet Haven raised funds and celebrated with Twins fans at the first Pet Haven Bark at the Park.

130 people purchased tickets through Pet Haven, with a portion of the proceeds going directly to support Pet Haven programs. The fans had a great time on a beautiful day, made even better when the Twins pulled out a 5-0 W-I-N over the Texas Rangers.

A highlight of the event was when Armor, one of the wonderful dogs available for adoption through Pet Haven, was on the field during the national anthem. Armor represented companion animals everywhere, and was the first dog ever on Target Field for a Twins game! Interested in adopting Armor? You can find out more here.

Pet Haven also had a special video play on the jumbotron, where it was viewed by thousands. You can watch the video here.

New to Pet Haven? Please consider adopting your next animal from us! And we’re always looking for more volunteers!

Thank you to all of the Pet Haven supporters who attended. We hope to see you again next year!

Armour was a great representative for Pet Haven at the Twin’s game today! Were you there? Did you catch the video about Pet Haven and some of our rescued pets looking for homes? If not, it will be available for wider viewing at an announced date.

Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this a reality – and especially to one who thought up the idea, worked with the Twins organization, contacted people to make the video a reality and managed ordering t shirts and tickets! Many thanks!

Armour was a star also – she and her foster home need to be recognized too!

If you check out our Facebook page you’ll see photos of recent intakes from both the cat and dog divisions. Adults and babies.

Dax was live trapped a few days after her kittens were born. She was just a kitten, along with her brother, born only a year ago. On April 7 she had 7 babies in a yard in S Minneapolis. All are doing well now, growing and responding to everyday handling. Pick those babies up, pet them, put them on their back and pet their tummies, give them kisses, talk to them! The list goes on. How often do you do that? Not once a day or every other day, you fit it into your schedule to do it as many times a day as possible.

To our knowledge Dax had not had people attention in her neighborhood. After 2 1/2 weeks she is scooting forward to get her cheeks and head rubbed, got a manicure yesterday and has started getting sub q fluids everyday as those babies are really starting to drain her of calories. It is hard for a disadvantaged mom who has had no care and no source of regular food to find enough to eat for herself – much less 7.

And here we are today -

Mom has a dirty nose because she smooshes her face into the canned food and it is hard to clean off. The babies are going to start working on softened canned kitten also to relieve her and keep them growing.

Her brother has now been live trapped too and has been tested and neutered and we’ll see how he adjusts to having people in his life also – no surprise, he’s an orange and white boy.

When Pet Haven brings in puppies and kittens as well as adult ones, they are available for adoption once their pictures and bios go up on our website. At that point you can submit an application and it will be considered in order received. Prior to appearing on the website there are vet visits, vaccinations, treatment for parasites, spay and neutering and a period of ‘getting-to-know- you’.
